The 2nd annual J'Kennethon Smith Memorial Tournament
was held July 13 in Pearl
J’Kennethon Smith died on July 9, 2022, after being struck by a vehicle protecting a female cousin by pushing her out of harm’s way. “Ken” was a top academic student, multi-sport athlete, farmer, and a Chess player. He taught chess to younger children.
Malcolm Johnson won the U600 division and became the first member of the Scott County Chess Club to win a tournament. Johnson began attending the club in 2023.
Johnson won his first two games and took a loss on third game with a bye mixed in. The tournament included four Swiss rounds of G/45+5 with three sections: Open, U1100, U600 Mixed Doubles.
